A month of fasting and friends
Moin is also a Muslim, one of 497,230 Australians and 1.6 billion people worldwide currently observing Ramadan, the holiest month of the Islamic calendar.
It's a commemoration of when Allah sent the Archangel Jibril to the Prophet Mohammad to convey to him the first verses of the Quran, nearly 1400 years ago. Amazingly, the rules have changed very little since that time. Muslim people are required to fast between sunrise and sunset, as well as adhere to a strict code of behaviour.
Children, pregnant or lactating women, those who are travelling, plus elderly people and the sick are the only people excused from fasting. And the entire month is reserved for preservation of the body and the spirit.
There are 3500 or so Muslim athletes competing at the London Games but not all are expected to fast. But at least nine players of the Moroccan Olympic football team are and according to their coach, Pim Verbeek, the fasting players sleep during the day, then eat at 9.30pm and stay awake until they've eaten again at 2.30am.
Mr Moin said his favourite part of Ramadan was the socialising, because every night friends and family gather together to break the fast in each other's homes: "It's the best part because we see each other more than any other time of year and our conversations have more meaning. At other times of the year we just turn on the television, play footy or go to the movies, but during Ramadan we really talk," he said.
Mr Moin can't remember exactly when he started observing Ramadan but thinks he was probably about 16. And while back then Ramadan was all about fasting, now an adult, with two children of his own, he's started to feel a greater spiritual awareness and connectedness.
"The rest of the year is all about 'me, me, me' but during Ramadan you are forced to think about the rest of the community and the people around you," he said.
A typical day in the month of Ramadan for Mr Moin starts at dawn: "At the moment I wake up at 5.25am and drink a glass of water and eat some dates." And that's the last thing he will eat until sunset.
Mr Moin says Ramadan these days is easier because it falls in the winter months. This is unlike the memories of his youth when they had to observe the holy month during the hottest part of January: "That was tough," he said.
After breakfast and a morning prayer, Moin then makes his way to work as normal, cheap ugg boots, but during Ramadan must bypass his normal coffee hit: "But I don get withdrawals, if anything I feel lighter on my feet."
This sensation of lightness continues throughout the day because Mr Moin does not eat lunch, a meal that usually makes him feel lethargic. Not taking a lunch break also means he can knock off an hour earlier from work. This means he gets home in ample time to break his fast with friends and family, his favourite time of day.
The evening meal is a social one for Muslims during Ramadan and there are no extra dietary guidelines set in place, so people eat and drink freely. Smokers, a practice discourage by the Muslim faith, are also permitted to light up again and sex is back on the cards until the next morning.
Moderate, pious and respectful behaviour is the most important aspect of Ramadan. Fasting is a tool for empathy, as Muslims are supposed to remember all other people in the world who are forced through poverty to be hungry. But they are also permitted to be mindful of their interactions with others.
Rude, jealous, mean or violent behaviour is completely prohibited during the month of Ramadan and each person is required to say twenty extra units of prayer every day, and usually in the evening.
This evening prayer is usually congregational, and also signifies the end of the day, at which point everyone heads home to sleep and the cycle starts again.
Ramadan ends this year on August 19, a date that will be marked with a threeday celebration called Eid Al Fitr, or "breaking the fast". For most people it is a time of celebration and joy, but Mr Moin said it was a time of mixed emotions.
"Physically it's like a detox, I feel lighter and more alert. But I usually also feel a bit upset that Ramadan is gone and socially we won't get to see our friends so much again for another year," he said.
