However, these prestigious bastions of the establishment have tried to grapple the radical beast with mixed results. <br />John Galliano was snapped up by Givenchy in 1995, amidst a suitable ruffling of feathers, to become the first British designer to head a French couture house since the War. He turned heads, attracting attention back to Haute Couture with his exquisite (and newsworthy) couture fantasia and his innate talent was quickly transferred to another Mo Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LMVH) brand, Christian Dior. There he continues to turn heads with his incredibly successful collections. <br />Alexander McQueen, however, had a different experience when he succeeded Galliano as head designer at Givenchy. The potential for sparks to fly became a frustrating reality and our "hooligan of British fashion" ignited controversy with a series of aggressive, hardedged collections that many including Comte Hubert de Givenchy himself considered out of keeping with the refined aesthetic of the label. These included collections containing imitation human bodyparts as adornment, PVC minidresses that exposed the nipples, catwalks of flames and, in Autumn 1998, a show including carrobots spraying paint over a white cotton dress and doubleamputee model Aimee Mullins striding down the catwalk on intricately carved wooden legs.
