Second to none
I love Hong Kong for the obvious: food, chaos and shopping. But unlike the food and the chaos, I can never get enough of the shopping.
There's something therapeutic about it. For one thing, the city does not tax luxury items such as jewellery, clothes and leather goods. For another, it never feels inappropriate to flash your branded bags here. And yes, I was in a dire need of a shallow, feelgood experience.
To be realistic, I couldn't afford a pair of Prada or a Mulberry bag.
Hong Kong offers a wide range of highend fashion retailers, from popular brands like Louis Vuitton to cult designer labels such as Comme des Garcons.
In a place where the public transportation is reliable and property prices are beyond the reach of most working people, they tend to spend their hardearned cash on fashion.
As Yenn Wong, 35, a Singaporean hotelier who resides in Hong Kong, puts it: "We are talking about a 121sq m apartment unit that costs US$1.3mil (RM4.3mil) . If you can't flaunt your wealth and success through property, then you show it through your bags and watches."
Following the financial tsunami last year, however, many people turned to secondhand designer stores. Hong Kong native Constance Yow, 32, a selfconfessed shopaholic, admits that she resorted to secondhand designer shops after the recession.
"Most of the products are in good shape and about 30% cheaper than the retail price," says Yow, who frequents Hong Kong's Milan Station, a secondhand designer shop known for its great selection of handbags.
There are many other shoppers who would agree with Yow. I, for one, couldn't stop drooling over the Birkins when visiting Milan Station in Central area.
"I came across a preowned red Birkin bag sold at HK$40,000 (RM17,000),moncler pas cher, which is very cheap," Yow enthuses,
"Most of the secondhand Birkins here sell for HK$68,000. At the Hermes Hong Kong flagship store in Central, a similar Birkin bag retails for HK$69,000 upwards, and there's a yearlong queue. Of course, the price varies depending on colour and material.
What's in store
How cheap is cheap? Once in a while, you will come across a great deal. But more often than not, you only get 20%30% off the retail price.
The leading player in the secondhand luxury market is Milan Station, whose first store opened 10 years ago in Hong Kong. Currently, it runs 10 outlets in Hong Kong, and three branches in Taipei, Macau and Beijing.
Milan Station offers a great selection of vintage as well as brandnew bags, from Louis Vuitton, Alzer 80 luggage, Chanel bags to the latest offering from Balenciaga.
According to Tony Chan, Milan Station's chief marketing officer, all the bags sold in his outlets are genuine and approved by the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
Fresh off the runway
Chan explains that Milan Station has a good rapport with Hong Kong's society ladies, many of whom grab the latest handbags hot off the runways. Once bored with their new toys, these ladies sell their hardly used bags to Milan Station.
Many times, they get bored even before the bags hit the store. "This is how we get the latest products," Chan explains.
There are also other popular secondhand stores, namely Paris Station, Italy Station, Second Hand Shop and Brand Off. Employing similar strategies as Milan Station, these stores too offer a great selection of preowned handbags. If you, like me, have no problem bagging someone else's bags, then you should visit these stores.
