Granted, polka dots have been around for a while. They were actually first seen in the 1830's, and gained popularity on the mainstream in the late 40's and early 50's. In the late 60's, a visual artist from Japan seized on the polka dot as the mark she wanted to make in New York. Kusama painted her body and staged semi nude events that had her running from the police straight into art history. She considered Andy Warhol's Superstars a 'rival gang'. Eventually, her antics got her a bad reputation and she left New York to return to Japan in 1973. From that time to this, the polka dot express's momentum has been slowly building. This year, Kusama redesigned the outside of the Louis Vuitton boutique on Fifth Avenue. The thing about polka dots is that they can be on anything you wear, such as a pair of polka dot covered heels or a bag. You can do a skirt, or a blouse, maybe just a scarf. You can make a personal statement by seeking out nontraditional color pairings, such as green background/yellow dots. You could do all black, and then have polka dot socks. Or you could wear all polka dots with solid accessories. There is really no end to the ways that you can rock this. The best thing about this trend is that it's available at all price levels.
